You Are What You Think... Or Are You?
"As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." — Proverbs 23:7
We've all heard the saying, "You are what you think." But is that completely true? Or is there something even deeper?
From the moment we are born, we begin absorbing the world around us. We are shaped by our families, our environments, our cultures, and our experiences. We learn behaviors, develop beliefs, and adopt character traits that eventually become part of who we are.
Life itself becomes a teacher.
Whether our experiences have been joyful or painful, positive or negative, they all leave an imprint on our minds. They influence how we think, how we respond to life, what we believe about ourselves, and what we expect from the future.
What we repeatedly read, watch, hear, and choose to believe strengthens our way of thinking. Over time, our thoughts begin to shape our attitudes, our decisions, and ultimately, our lives.
But here's the question...
Who Is Really Living Inside Your Head?
Have you ever stopped long enough to challenge your own thoughts?
Have you questioned your beliefs?
Have you examined your behaviors to determine whether they truly align with the person you are—or the person God created you to become?
Many of us spend years evaluating everyone else while rarely taking an honest look within ourselves.
So, ask yourself:
Who is living inside your head?
What Are You Feeding Your Mind?
Every day you feed your mind something.
Are you feeding it:
Fear?
Negativity?
Anger?
Anxiety?
Unforgiveness?
Lingering pain?
Trauma you've refused to heal from?
Or are you feeding it faith, hope, wisdom, gratitude, and truth?
The mind works much like the body. Whatever you feed it consistently becomes stronger.
If you continually consume negative thoughts, eventually negativity begins to feel normal.
If you constantly rehearse past hurts, your pain becomes louder than your purpose.
If you believe you're incapable, you'll begin living as though you truly are.
Do You Believe the Best About Yourself? Message Blog "You Are What You Think ...Or Are You"
Do you believe there is good in you?
Do you believe there is still hope for your family?
Your children?
Your marriage?
Your career?
Your community?
Your future?
Sometimes the greatest obstacle standing between us and the life we desire isn't our circumstances.
It's our thinking.
Many people don't pursue opportunities because they've already convinced themselves they'll fail.
They don't ask because they assume the answer is "no."
They don't dream because they've accepted limitation as truth.
Could it be that you don't have certain things—not because they're impossible—but because somewhere along the way you stopped believing they were possible?
Or... Do You Believe You've Already Arrived?
On the other hand, perhaps you believe there's nothing left to learn.
Nothing left to improve.
Nothing that needs healing.
Nothing that needs changing.
Maybe you believe everyone else is the problem.
The world is chaotic—but you're not.
Your thinking is perfect.
Your beliefs never need examination.
Your actions never require correction.
But growth begins the moment we become teachable.
The healthiest people continually evaluate themselves—not from a place of condemnation, but from a desire to become better.
Who Defines You?
So...
Are you simply what you think?
Or are you who others have told you that you are?
Have your parents' words become your identity?
Have your failures become your identity?
Have your successes become your identity?
Or...
Are you who God says you are?
Perhaps the most important question isn't "What am I thinking?"
Perhaps it's...
"Where did these thoughts come from?"
Did they come from fear?
From rejection?
From trauma?
From comparison?
From culture?
Or did they come from God's truth?
Renewing the Mind
The Bible teaches us that transformation doesn't begin with changing our circumstances.
It begins by renewing our minds.
When we allow God to reshape our thinking, our attitudes begin to change.
Our choices improve.
Our relationships grow healthier.
Our peace becomes deeper.
Our purpose becomes clearer.
The battlefield has always been the mind.
The victory begins there too.
Final Thoughts
Maybe today's questions have made you uncomfortable.
Maybe they've challenged beliefs you've carried for years.
Or perhaps they've simply caused you to pause and think.
That's a good place to begin.
Growth begins with awareness.
Healing begins with honesty.
Transformation begins when we become willing to question the thoughts we've accepted as truth.
So I'll leave you with one final question...
Who is living inside your head?
And even more importantly...
Does that person reflect who God created you to be?
If not, today is a wonderful day to begin renewing your mind, embracing God's truth, and becoming the person He has always intended you to be.
